Wrinkle Creams FAQ:
The words Fire Department make it sound like they’re the ones starting fires, doesn’t it? It should be called the “Extinguishing Department”. We don’t call the police the “Crime Department”. And what about wrinkle cream? Doesn’t sound like it causes wrinkles? And why would a doctor prescribe pain pills? I already have pain! I need relief pills!

? are you O.K?
it is called the fire department because it is the department that deals with fire related issues.
Know it doesn’t. You’re seriously confused and putting way too much thought into pointless subjects. You’re not at all funny, or different in your thinking.
Oh the joys of the English language and its idiosyncrasies and idioms (think that’s right). Why make something more complicated to say than is necessary. If you want to argue semantics, yes I suppose you’re right, but then the Fire Department don’t just put out fires, at least they don’t in the UK. They also teach fire safety, do safety inspections, and sometime if it’s safer, will let a fire burn itself out, so to call them the Extinguishing department wouldn’t be correct anyway…
As for the other things, if you’ve been bought up with these phrases being bandied about, you get used to them. I’d guess it’d only be really confusing if you were learning English as a second language.
Ha you’re right, I never really thought about that before.
As I read it I kept nodding my head…. yeah I understand you.
It does seem kinda strange to call if it the Fire Department, or to call a cream to remove wrinkles- Wrinkle cream ….yep, lol
But unfortunately, there isn’t much we can do but grow to accept it…
Wish I had a real explanation for you… and myself.
